Chronic ad Acute Pain Treatment with Acupuncture in Boca Raton FL.

Acute pain is usually mild or moderate in severity and may last anywhere from days to weeks to months. It usually dissipates when the underlying cause is addressed. Acute pain that is not addressed properly will result in chronic pain. Acute pain can affect any part of the body and can result in many different types of pain, such as muscle, joint or nerve pain.

Chronic pain is defined as pain that has lasted longer than 6 months. Either one (Acute or Chronic) will limit your ability to participate in normal, daily activities and can result in depression, irritability, weakened immune system and poor sleep. It definitely can take a physical and emotional toll on a person.

The most common types of pain that become chronic are usually headache, low back pain, joint pain and nerve pain. Others that we see in the clinic are generalized muscle pain or pain affecting specific parts of the body such as knee, shoulder, neck or hip pain. Acupuncture can also effectively treat TMJ.

Carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis and other types of foot pain, and tennis / golf elbow are other chronic pain conditions that are commonly treated.

The symptoms of chronic pain include:
1. Mild, moderate or severe pain that has lasted more than 6 months and does not show signs of easing up.
2. Pain that can be described as shooting, burning, dull, stabbing, aching, or electrical.
3. Feeling of tightness, stiffness, soreness or generalized discomfort.

Conventional Treatment for Chronic and Acute Pain

Chronic or acute pain conditions are usually treated with NSAID’s or in more severe cases with opioids that provide an analgesic effect that may have short- or long-term benefits. Physical therapy treatment is also often sought out, either by the patient or referred to by a primary care doctor or orthopedist if medications are not enough to resolve the issue. These treatments may work fine in certain cases and your pain may be alleviated. It should be noted that medications, whether over the counter or prescribed, do come with unwanted side effects and the possibility of dependence and addiction.

The good news is that there is a viable, safer alternative! Read on…

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine in the Treatment of Chronic / Acute Pain

Acupuncture and Pain Management - let us help at our Boca Raton Acupuncture clinic.Acupuncture is truly one of the safest and most effective treatments for chronic and acute pain. From a Chinese medicine perspective, chronic or acute pain is merely obstruction of Qi and blood due to trauma, stress, or pathogenic influences.

When there is a problem with Qi and/or blood flow to an area of the body, that area cannot function properly. By inserting fine, sterile needles into acupuncture points on the body, qi and blood will begin to move freely and subsequent natural healing of the body will begin.

It all starts with getting to the root cause of your pain. Understanding your pain is one of the first crucial steps of coming up with best ways of managing it. A good acupuncturist should be able to identify the root cause of your pain (through diagnostic tools such as tongue and pulse diagnosis, and a thorough exam) and develop a treatment plan that produces results.

Chinese cupping, Chinese herbal medicine and homeopathic injection therapy are also offered at Boca Raton Acupuncture to facilitate healing and optimize pain reduction.

From a Scientific Standpoint…

Acupuncture is all about correcting Qi and blood flow. But what is it doing to your body from a scientific, western medical viewpoint? Acupuncture works by dilating blood vessels which increases blood flow to an area of the body to relieve pain. That sounds similar to the Chinese medicine view, doesn’t it?

But there’s more. Acupuncture also works by stimulating the nervous system, activating nerves and fibers that travel from the inner and outer layers of the skin to the spinal column and brain. This improves the nerve signal to the brain and allows it to release natural painkillers to help relieve your discomfort.

The Research…

There’s plenty of research out there backing the efficacy of acupuncture and pain. Click here to read a Research Study from PubMed on the “Effect of Acupuncture on Pain and Quality of Life in Patients with Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: A Case Series Study” .

Whichever way you look at it, the bottom line is that acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural ability to heal itself without any side effects! What a wonderful style of medicine!
