Acupuncture for Low Back Pain
Scientific studies show that acupuncture treatment stimulates substances known as endorphins which relieve pain. These chemicals are usually responsible for altering pain experience and promoting the sense of wellness in the body. Traditional acupuncture is based on a belief that the body has energy flow patterns. It is believed that the energy, also known as “qi” or life force, flows in channels referred to as meridians.
Acupuncture also induces the release of natural opioids. Opioids are chemicals found in the brain that are known to induce sleep and lessen pain. Acupuncture also affects the release of neuro-hormones and neurotransmitters, which can help block pain receptors.
Acupuncture is also widely known to help promote better circulation of blood as well as having strong anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic affects throughout the body. Acupuncture is preferred to other conventional ways of treating lower back pain due to its long term effectiveness along with the fact that it has no side effects.
What happens during an acupuncture session?
When you visit us at Boca Raton Acupuncture for low back pain treatment, we start by asking you about your medical history as well as your general health. We’ll also ask you questions specific to your low back pain and whether you had undergone any other form of treatment. After this evaluation, a physical exam if often performed to help us find the root cause of the low back pain. You will be given the opportunity to give us as much information that you feel is relevant to your condition and treatment.
After a thorough evaluation and exam, a treatment plan is formed and we may begin treatment. At this point sterile, painless acupuncture needles are inserted in specific points on the body (usually referred to as acupuncture points). The needles inserted in the body are very thin and a few centimeters long and are retained for approximately 20 minutes. Results are often seen after a few treatments but of course it varies with each patient and each condition. Typically low back pain can be resolved within 6 -10 treatments. Chinese herbs and nutritional supplements that reduce inflammation are often prescribed to facilitate healing.
