Acupuncture may not be a new term to many people. You may be hearing more and more about it through friends, the news, and of course social media. It is becoming increasingly more popular and mainstream. But generally, when hearing the word acupuncture many people may think of needles and possibly a frightening experience. This is SO not the case.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method of treating disease where needles are inserted into the body at certain points to improve the flow of energy or Qi (pronounced “chee”). A disease can arise, according to Chinese Medicine, when their is a blockage of this energy they call Qi. Acupuncture is a very powerful method of treating disease, eliminating pain, soothing psychological distress, balancing hormones, and in so many cases improving the quality of life for those getting treatment.

Acupuncture regulates Qi flow, boosts normal body functions and helps with natural self-healing for the body by the stimulation of certain specific anatomic sites commonly referred to as acupuncture points. This stimulation is done through the insertion of fine, sterile, and virtually painless needles into these identified acupuncture points on the body.

Before the beginning of treatment, like many other medical procedures, it all begins with a thorough examination. This exam that we perform involves questions regarding your specific condition (onset, frequency, duration, intensity, etc.) on your personal medical history (surgeries, medications, etc.), examination of the tongue (tongue diagnosis), feeling of the patient’s pulse (pulse diagnosis), and a general physical examination and assessment of one’s health status (just like it is with modern diagnosis and treatment). The treatment begins after all information is gathered and a differential diagnosis and treatment plan is formulated.

Lying comfortably, the acupuncture needles are then gently placed in the various acupuncture points and are retained in the body for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Chinese herbs and sometimes nutritional supplements are prescribed as an adjunct to treatment. Other modalities of treatment can sometimes be included, such as Chinese Cupping, but that is based on individual need.

Post treatment, instructions are given on follow up. A series of 6 – 10 treatments is usually the norm in many cases, but as always this number is unique to each case. Some require less, some more to achieve desired results.

Most people feel a sense of calm and relaxation after acupuncture. Many report dissipation in symptoms, as well as a general sense of well-being. Patients generally report sleeping better, having more energy, improved mood and other positive feedback.

The best news of all is that acupuncture can effectively treat a wide range of debilitating diseases and conditions. Click here for a full list.
